A decisão da construção do museu no local onde a independência foi proclamada foi tomada poucos meses após o evento, porém o início da obra em si só ocorreu 62 anos depois, sendo finalizada em 1890.
Os primeiros jardins em torno do museu foram construídos por volta de 1908 e apresentaram, como inspiração, os jardins barrocos franceses.
Em 1952, tomou-se a decisão de se construir um mausoléu para os túmulos de Dom Pedro I, da imperatriz Dona Leopoldina, para abrigar os objetos da família real e também ilustrar algumas passagens e personagens históricos através de estátuas que decoram o monumento.

Park of Independence, also known as Gardens of Museum, is located in Ipiranga district, in Sao Paulo in the area where the historical event of Independence of Brazil took place in 1822. In the same area we have a museum.
The decision to build this Museum had been taken months later after the conquest of Independence, however its construction has begun only 62 years later and it was finished in 1890.
The first gardens were developed around 1908 and had the French Baroque Gardens as inspiration.
In 1952 another monument was built, a vault for the imperor responsible for Independence of Brazil, D.Pedro I, also for the empress, D. Leopoldina and for some objects of the Portuguese royal family. This monument is decorated with some statues representing historical characters and moments.
