Se fosse “só” pelos Beatles, Liverpool já valeria muito a pena, mas Liverpool vale a pena por ser Liverpool. Aquele misto de cidade moderna, com espírito da revolução industrial em seus prédios, nas casas e ainda se preparando para ser a capital da cultura européia de 2008.

Desde a chegada em Liverpool a caminho do albergue fui me envolvendo com a cidade, que é um grande canteiro de obras hoje em dia (só pra se ter idéia, estão construindo o maior shopping center da Europa lá), mas em nada isso atrapalhou meu roteiro.

Liverpool é banhada pelo rio Mersey (para aqueles que conhecem, ouçam a música Mersey Paradise do Stone Roses) que entra na cidade vindo do Oceano Atlântico. Ao lado do rio, as docas – Albert Dock – que hoje virou um conjunto de museus, bares, lojas e que com o bom tempo foi um ótimo lugar para iniciar o passeio.

No Albert Dock fica o museu Beatles Story e é de onde se inicia a Magical Mystery Tour – o tour pelo mundo dos Beatles. Depois de ter visitado o museu, passamos pela Penny Lane, o Strawberry Fields, as casas do John Lennon e Paul McCartney. Foi um dos momentos mágicos da viagem, que terminou no Cavern Club, acreditem, lá mesmo onde os Beatles já tocaram. Não é o Cavern original, mas o espírito do antigo prédio estava lá no mesmo local!

Fui também ao estádio do Liverpool – chamado Anfield – por dois motivos: um, sou Brasileiro e gosto de futebol. Dois, o meu Tricolor Paulista ganhou o mundial em cima do Liverpool. E que estádio! Aliás, cheguei na cidade às vésperas da final da Copa da Uefa entre Liverpool e Milan… ao menos os torcedores do Liverpool estavam a todo vapor

Destaco também dois lugares completamente antagônicos: a catedral de Liverpool, a maior catedral da Inglaterra. É uma catedral Anglicana, com um estilo arquitetônico bem diferente das demais por onde passei, mas é imponente, impressiona pelo seu tamanho, numa esquina tranquila e discreta.

E o pub Philarmonic cuja decoração o transformou num ponto turístico. Estava lotado, mas tomar uma pint admirando a decoração do lugar foi uma grande despedida de Liverpool.

Dica: faça um passeio de Mersey Ferry – um passeio de balça que nos leva ao outro lado do rio. Não desci lá porque não tive tempo, mas à distância se percebe bem as nuances da cidade de Liverpool

If it was “only” for the Beatles, Liverpool would be worth a visit, however, Liverpool is worth a visit for Liverpool itself. A city where we can see a balance among a modern city style, the Industrial Revolution spirit on their buildings and houses and also for being 2008 European Capital of Culture.

Since from my arrival in Liverpool I was getting involved by the city which is under a great moment of reconstruction, but it was not a problem in my tour (just to mention, they are building the biggest shopping mall in Europe).

River Mersey cross the city coming from the Atlantic Ocean (for those who knows Stone Roses, listen to Mersey Paradise song). Beside the river there is a group of docks, known as Albert Dock, which are, nowadays, a centre of entertainment with museums, pubs and restaurants and stores. The weather was sunny and Albert Dock was a nice place to start my city tour.

Albert Dock is where The Beatles Story Museum is and also from where the bus to the Magical Mystery Tour departs – the tour around part of Beatles world. After visiting The Beatles Story, we walked through Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, John Lennon and Paul McCartney houses. It was one of the magical moments of my trip, ending at the Cavern Club, yes, the club where the Beatles have already played. The building is not the original one, but the spirit was there, at the same place!

I also visited Liverpool stadium – The Anfield for two reasons: first, I am Brazilian and I enjoy football. Second, the team I am fan of – Sao Paulo won 2005 World Championshiop vs Liverpool (sorry Liverpool fans!). But I have to admit, what a Stadium! By the way, I was in Liverpool some days before the Uefa Champions League final game between Liverpool and Milan… at least, Liverpool fans were full of energy and confident.

I would like to mention two special and opposite places: Liverpool Cathedral and Philarmonic pub. Liverpool Cathedral is the biggest in England. It is an Anglican cathedral presenting a completely different architecture comparing to all the others I visited in my trip, but it´s impressive and really huge.

The Philarmonic pub became a touristic point due to its decoration. It was crowded, but drinking a pint admiring the its furniture and decoration was a great farewell from Liverpool.

Hint: enjoy the Mersey Ferry – a nice tour around River Mersey. From the ferry you can see Liverpool across the river and with some distant, you can really notice Liverpool different faces.
