Igreja Nossa Senhora do Ó / Church of Our Lady (Borough of Freguesia do Ó)

The borough of Freguesia do Ó is one of the oldest and most traditional in Sao Paulo.

It was established in 1580 by the Portuguese pioneer Manoel Preto, alongside Tiete river. This borough was founded just 26 years after the establishment of Sao Paulo city.

Freguesia do Ó is a neighbourhood with traditional houses and style. Although nowadays we have some modern apartments buildings, we can also see some “countryside” house styles right surrounding the church square.

And it´s worth mentioning that it´s also famous because of a bar called Frangó which is always cited as one of the best in the city.

It was not because of the bar that I went to Freguesia do Ó. One  day I was driving through Tiete express way and saw, there at the top of the district, a church which called my attention a lot – it is Parish Church of Our Lady.

Unfortunately things are not usually what they look like. At a certain distance, this church is imposing, captivating. However, getting closer, a sort of dissapointment came too.

The history of this church is split in two parts: one started in 1610 when Manoel Preto got an authorisation to build a chapel at the old square.

The chapel was built and improved becoming the neighbourhood Parish Church in 1796. It served the comunity until 1896 when a fire destroyed it almost completely.

And here we have the begining of the second part. The present Parish Church was begun in 1898, not at the same site of the old one, but where it is today.
