E lá estávamos numa bela tarde de safari, parados em meio à seca savana do Kruger Park, observando possíveis rastros que pudessem nos levar ao encontro de algum outro magnífico animal, quando, despretensiosamente, um elefante solitário aparece, ao longe saindo de trás de algumas árvores.
O momento foi de total supresa e êxtase, afinal não esperávamos encontrar um elefante solitário daquela forma. E, de repente, de maneira bem lenta, ele veio caminhando em nossa direção.
O ranger experiente tirou o jeep do meio do caminho e o estacionou deixando a traseira do carro na direção da trilha do elefante.
E ele continou caminhando, caminhando… e ficando mais perto… até um certo ponto em que nós, no jeep (estávamos em 4 pessoas), começamos a nos entreolhar com certa cara de espanto, afinal o elefante estava vindo em nossa direção e sem apresentar o menor “interesse” em desviar do nosso carro (e o ranger, por outro lado, sem demonstrar nenhuma ação para nos tirar dali).
Eis que ele chegou-chegando… deu uma leve esbarrada no jeep, que se sacudiu um pouco. Nessa hora, uma das turistas ameaçou um grito, mas rapidamente o ranger disse “por favor, fique em silêncio. Você não quer ver esse elefante virar esse jeep de cabeça pra baixo, não é?”.
Silêncio e pânico claro!!!
Mas, foi só isso. Um susto de leve!
O simpático elefante passou por nós e continou seu caminho sozinho, talvez refletindo sobre a vida, enfim lá se foi ele.
Ainda havia um outro jeep à sua frente que decidiu partir antes da sua chegada. Melhor não arriscar né, nós já havíamos atrapalhado o percurso da caminhada do elefante.

And there we were in a really nice safari afternoon, stopped in the middle of a dry season African Savannah at Kruger Park, just observing possible trails that could lead us to the encounter of some other magnificent animal, when, unpretentiously, a lonely elephant appeared, far far distant away coming from behind the trees.
That was a moment of total excitement and surprise, as we were not expecting to meet an lonely elephant that particular way. Suddenly, and very slowly, there he came into our direction.
The experienced ranger moved the jeep out of the track and parked it in a way that the rear of the car was aiming the track where the elephant was walking on.
So, there he came walking, walking… and he was getting close… and even closer, until a moment we, inside the jeep (we were four people) started looking at each other with those frightening/surprised type of look, and it could not be different. The elephant was coming into us, without showing any “intention” of changing his direction (and the ranger without showing any attempt of moving us away from there as well).
And he came the closest possible… bumped his legs on the back of the car, smoothly shaking it. At this right moment, the lady in the jeep thought of screaming and very quickly the ranger said: “please, stay quite. You don´t want to see this elephant turn this car upside down, do you?”.
Deep silence and panic, for sure!!!
But, it was only that. A light scare!
The sympathetic elephant passed us by and continued his lonely walk, maybe thinking about life, and there he went.
There was another jeep in front of him which decided to move before the elephant arrived closer. It would be better not take the risk, after all we had already stayed on his way!
