Sillustani e as torres funerárias / Sillustani and the funeral towers

No período da tarde mudamos de cenário e fomos para Sillustani, um sitio arqueológico localizado num simpático vilarejo cerca de 35 km de Puno e que traz algumas construções incríveis.

Essas construções são as Chullpas, ou seja, as torres funerárias dos pré-Incas Collas e Incas (a diferença é que as torres rústicas eram pré-Incas e as polidas eram Incas) nas quais os nobres da época eram enterrados, na maioria das vezes, em posição fetal e, isso porque se entendia que o momento da morte era o renascimento para uma nova vida, num outro mundo.

Muitas dessas torres foram destruídas pelos “caçadores de tesouros”, uma vez que a tradição da época envolvia enterrar a pessoa com alguns pertences, pois se acreditava que se partiria para uma nova vida e seriam necessários tais pertences. Por isso, eles celebravam a morte com alegria. Porém, quando os espanhóis dominaram aqueles povos, eles não conseguiam entender tal comportamento e passaram a exigir que eles chorassem nos funerais.

As Chullpas de Sillustani ficam num platô a 3.900 metros de altitude às margens do lago Umayo. Talvez, pelo fato de ter sido meu primeiro dia de atividade na altitude de Puno, a subida ao topo do sítio arqueológico me exigiu um bom esforço (os efeitos da altitude foram sentidos), mas valeu a pena subir, não apenas para visitar as ruínas, mas também pelo visual belíssimo que toda aquela região em geral, e o lago Umayo em particular, proporciona a seus visitantes.

Aqui a minha viagem já estava ganhando contornos especiais e ainda era apenas o começo.

That day in the afternoon we changed the scenery and went to Sillustani, an archeological site located in a sympathetic village around 35 km from Puno and where we can see some amazing constructions.

These constructions, their ruins in fact, are the Chullpas, the burial towers built by the pre Inca Collas and the Incas(the rustic ones are pre Incas and the polished ones are Incas) in which they buried elite at that period, most of the time, in foetal position and, it was because for them the death was the moment of the rebirth into a new life in another world. That´s why they used to celebrate death as something positively special. However, when the Spanishes dominated them, they could not understand this celebration and forced them to learn how to cry in death moments.

The Chullpas of Sillustani are 3,900 m above the sea level at the shores of Umayo lake. Perhaps, due to the fact that it was my first day of activity in Puno, the trail to the top of the plateau of this archeological site demanded me some extra effort (the effects of the altitude were strong), but it was well worth reaching it, not only to visit the ruins, but also to admire the amazingly beautiful view of the region in general and the Umayo lake in particular.

Here my trip was gaining a special meaning and it was just the beginning.
