Lima: O inicio da aventura/ Lima: the beginning of the adventure

Aliás, vale ressaltar desde o primeiro post…a culinária do Perú é excelente.

  • água, so mineral.

  • praça do amor.

This trip was atypical for me, at least concerning the days prior to departure, as I am used to planning it, but this time everything was decided in only 4 days.

It was like this because I was in a job transition moment and I got 10 days of Holidays, so I decided to go in one of the my listed adventures: the trail to Machu Picchu.

Everything seeme to be a disaster. I woke up late in the morning of the flight (lucky me I did my ckeckin on line), I forgot my backpack (as you will see it was not the backpack with my photographic equipment), I was not allowed to embark with the walking stick (and I haven´t succeed shipping it too). Bottom line… it seemed that my “lack of previous preparation” would cost me a nice trip. But, it was just a “rite of passage” to emphasise that period in my life as since the moment I went into the airplane I only had great surprises in this trip.

It was 10 days of trip split among: Lima, Puno, the trail of Salcantay, Cusco and finally Machu Picchu.

Starting by the capital city of Peru, I just stayed a few hours there in fact. I arrived during the lunch time and I left Lima the next morning to Puno where I went to acclimatise with the high altitude but where I got surprised by the view and the tours.

Considering I had few hours only, I decided to go in a city tour, although it is not something that I enjoy, but I at least I got a little from the city history.

My lunch was at Mango´s restaurant in La Marco mall with an excelent view of the sea. By the way it is important to emphasise how excelent is the Peruvian cuisine.

Some curiosities about the city:

  • according the the local guide, in Lima it does not rain.
  • do you want to drink water? Drink only mineral water.
  • there is no taximetre in the taxis. You have to negotiate the price prior to start the journey. And be always sure about the money they are talking about – dolar or soles (1US$ = 2,50 soles).
  • the traffic is terrible not only because of the traffic jam, but also due to the lack of respect on streets juctions, for example and the excessive honk.

The city tour was short. We went through the following touristic points:

  • ruins of a pyramid in the city
  • “Love Square”
  • Plaza Mayor – where the goverment buildings are and where the city “began”.
  • monastery of Sao Francisco and the catacombs.

The city deserver more time, a day more, to better explore its attractions.
