Manchester foi a penúltima cidade do meu roteiro e, a essa altura, muitos poderiam pensar que eu já estava com o sentimento de “está acabando”, mas Manchester guardava muito mais para esse viajante aqui. Não foi apenas a importância como cidade que me levou até lá. Eu tinha grandes motivos pessoais para visitar Manchester.
Assim como Liverpool, Manchester também mantém aquele misto de modernidade com resquícios da Revolução Industrial. Aliás, as duas cidades são ligadas pelo rio Mersey.
Em Manchester, fiz mais um amigo, o chinês Liu Tian Gang, para os amigos ocidentais, apenas TG (olá TG!).
Ao chegar, fui visitar o estádio Manchester United e, me desculpem os torcedores do Liverpool, mas isto sim é que é estádio. Sinto dizer, mas o Old Trafford – nome do estádio do Manchester United – dá um baile nos nossos estádios!
Caminhando pela cidade em direção ao estádio, pude perceber as duas Manchester – uma com seu estilo mais histórico, antigo e outra mais moderna, atual. E pude ver também os canais da cidade. Não chega a ser Veneza, mas tem os seus canais e sua beleza.
Para quem não conhece a banda inglesa The Smiths, ou melhor, pra quem não é fã dos Smiths, Manchester é mais um cidade importante da Inglaterra. Porém, pra quem é fã dos Smiths e, claro que me incluo neste grupo, Manchester tem muito a dizer, primeiro porque é a cidade natal dos integrantes dessa grande banda dos anos 80, depois é lá que fica o Salford Lads Club (mais uma vez…esta é para os fãs!).
Ok, vou resumir para os não fãs. O Salford Lads Club é algo como uma academia fundada em 1903 e que funciona até hoje, porém a sua notoriedade não é por sua longa existência, mas sim por ter servido de cenário para a clássica foto dos Smiths no mais clássico ainda álbum da banda The Queen is Dead. Depois desta foto, o clube virou um ponto de peregrinação dos fãs, tanto que eles montaram uma sala especialmente dedicada à banda, com direito a objetos deles, fotos e tudo mais. Sendo um fã da banda, Manchester tinha de estar no meu roteiro e que surpresas me aguardavam.
No segundo dia fui ao Salford Lads Club. Esse foi um dos grandes momentos, se não o auge da minha viagem.
Ao chegar no clube, tudo fechado, sem ninguém. Mesmo assim, já estava satisfeito por estar lá. De repente, alguém me diz “Ei, você é o Ricardo do Brasil?”. Respondi que sim, mas fiquei pensando como é que ele sabe? Quem me perguntou foi o Leslie, coordenador do clube para quem havia enviado um email dizendo sobre a minha visita. Ele disse que havia marcado na agenda o dia da minha chegada e estava me esperando para me apresentar o clube. Senti-me honrado naquele momento. Que recepção! Somente eu lá naquele dia e fui recebido com toda simpatia e atenção. (Valeu Leslie!).
É dificil descrever esse momento, mas pra quem ouve The Smiths desde adolescente e é fã, entrar nesse ícone que é o Salford Lads Club…é algo indescritível. Leslie me mostrou todo o clube, me contou a história, e me reservou dois momentos inesquecíveis. Primeiro, visitar a sala dos Smiths que tem parte da sua decoração original junto com fotos e objetos da banda, fotos dos fãs tiradas na frente do clube (a minha agora está lá também…Uhuuuu!!!) e segundo, me mostrou a sala onde o ex-baterista dos Smiths ensaia com sua nova banda. Não tenho a habilidade para descrever em palavras esse momento. Só posso dizer que foi FANTÁSTICO E INACREDITÁVEL!!!
Há um frase em uma das canções dos Smiths “Oh Manchester, so much to answer for”. Sem dúvida, Manchester teve muito para responder…positivamente nessa minha viagem!

Manchester was the city before the last one in my schedule. At this moment, some may think I was wondering “my trip is getting to the end”, but Manchester still had great moments for me. The fact that Manchester is an important English city is enough to visit it, but I had special interest in it!
As Liverpool, Manchester also shows a balance between modernity and Industrial Revolution spirit. By the way, both cities are linked by the River Mersey.
In Manchester I met another friend, the Chinese guy, Liu Tian Gang, known as TG for the westerners. (Hi Mate, how is your dissertation?).
When I got there, I went to visit Manchester United stadium – The Old Trafford – and I am sorry Liverpool fans, but that was a real stadium. Old Trafford in more impressive than Brazilian stadiums!
Walking around the city I could see the “two” Manchesters – one presenting the historycal old buildings and the other presenting its modernity. I also saw some of its channels. It is not Venice, but there are some channels and they have some beauty.
For those who don´t know a band called The Smiths, I mean, for those who are not a Smiths fan, Manchester is another important city in England. However, for a Smiths fan, and be sure I am one of them, Manchester has much more to say. First it is where the band was formed and second, there it is Salford Lads Club (once again, this is for the fans!).
Ok, I am going to briefly explain it. Salford Lads Club was founded in 1903 and it´s still in operation until today. But it´s not known by this fact, it is because it was in front of Salford Lads Club that The Smiths took a classical picture printed on the sleeve of their classical The Queen is Dead album. From this moment on, Salford Lads Club became a place of The Smiths fans pilgrimage so seriously that they´ve built a special room to the band where we can see many photos and objects from or to the Smiths. As a fan, I had to have Manchester in my trip route.
On the second day I went to Salford Lads Club. It was one of the greatest moments of my trip. When I arrived there, it was closed. Even tough, I was already satisfied for being there. Suddenly someone asked me ” Hey, are you Ricardo from Brazil?”. I said “yes, I am”, but how did he know me? It was Leslie, the coordinator of the club to whom I had sent an email speaking about my visit. He said he was waiting for me to open the club and present it to me. It was a great honour indeed. (Cheers Leslie! It was great!)
It´s hard to describe that moment, but for someone who has been enjoying The Smiths songs for a long time, to be there at Salford Lads Club was AMAZING! Leslie showed me all the club, told its history and I got two great moments: first, visiting The Smiths Room which still has the original gym apparatus together with things from the Band, pictures of the fans taken in front of the club (now, mine is also there!!!) and second, he showed me the room where the ex Smiths drummer is rehearsing with his new band nowadays.
I am not good with the words to express this moment. I can only say it was UNBELIEVABLE!
In one of their songs, the Smiths sing “Oh Manchester, so much to answer for”. I have no doubt, Manchester has already answered so much for in a positive way in my trip.
Manchester was the city before the final one in my trip, but it was like the Grand Finale! Thank you so much, Leslie!
